Wisconsin National Data Consortium

The Wisconsin National Data Consortium (WiNDC, for short) is an open source data repository and research consortium based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our mission is to provide open source multisectoral economic datasets to enable quantitative policy analysis, lower the barrier of entry to the development of general equilibrium models, and foster collaboration among researchers and policymakers.

Available Data

WiNDC is currently in a transitional period as we prepare to release stable versions of our data generated in Julia. We are working to ensure that our datasets are well-documented, reliable, and accessible to the research community. In the meantime, we encourage users to explore our legacy data, which has been widely used in various economic analyses. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to enhance our data offerings.

Legacy Data

Our legacy data is built in Python with models in GAMS. You can find the legacy data and documentation on the Datasets page. The models are available on the Models page.

For full directions on how to use the legacy data, please refer to the documentation provided in the GitHub repository.

Julia

We are actively working on transitioning our data generation and modeling to Julia. Julia closely aligns with our mission to provide fully open source datasets and models. This transition aims to leverage Julia's strengths in numerical computing and data analysis, providing a more efficient and robust framework for our datasets and models. We anticipate that this move will enhance the usability and performance of our resources for the research community.

We have alpha versions of our Julia build available for testing and feedback. There are three main repositories:

  • WiNDCNational.jl: National level data - We recommend this for learning the WiNDC structure
  • WiNDCRegional.jl: National data disaggregated to the 51 US states (DC included)
  • WiNDCHousehold.jl: The regional data disaggregated to 5 household income levels

If you are interested in transitioning to Julia, reach out to Mitch Phillipson. We offer support and guidance for users looking to adopt Julia. If additional training is needed, we are happy to provide that as well.

Funding

WiNDC is funded by our community. If you find our data useful in your research, please consider funding our efforts. Contact Mitch Phillipson for more information on how to contribute.

Mailing List

Stay up to date with the latest WiNDC news by joining our mailing list. We send out occasional updates about new data releases and upcoming seminars.
